Multiple regional touring car championships have also utilised the TCR regulations debuted by the TCR International Series in 2015, including TCR Europe. These regulations provide a relatively accessible means of racing full-on customer tin-tops, with models available from a wide range of manufacturers.
The highest-profile regional TCR championship, TCR Europe has largely enjoyed significant success. Initially launched as the TCR Trophy Europe, each round was part of an existing national TCR series rather than a standalone event. TCR Benelux and TCR Germany each had two rounds included in the trophy, while TCR Italy, TCR Portugal and TCR Russia had one.
For each round, the driver who scored the most points over the weekend was considered the winner of the weekend: the driver with the second most points scored that round was second, etc. This resulted in a few cases where multiple drivers were credited with the same position, as they both scored the same number of points. All in all the TCR Trophy Europe was massively confusing and a bit of a shambles, so unsurprisingly it was reworked for 2017.
For 2017 the Trophy status was retained, with the title contested over a single weekend. 2018 was the first season of TCR Europe as a traditional championship, and this was the point where the series began to take off. Since then TCR Europe has continually been one of the stand-out series run to the regulations, and after a difficult couple of years earlier in the 2020s the championship is in excellent health again in 2026.
